East Harlem is also known as Spanish Harlem or El Barrio. It starts
around East 100th Street and goes to East 135th Street. It's a community
of Hispanic and African Americans. East Harlem has it's own neighborhood
feel. It's very diverse and very mixed ethnic. It can be dangerous but
it's a tightly knit comunity. It's a place where people sit and talk
outside on the steps feeling close to their neighbors.
Even though East Harlem is one of the toughest neighborhoods in Manhattan
now-there are re-developments plans in the works. There alreeady has
been a large shopping center and movie complex opened. Prices are low
now but should increasesas the neighborhood improves.
A visit to Spanish Harlem will let you enjoy a big variety of inexpensive
ethnic restaurants found throughout the area.
