It's colorful history is built on a tradition of poor people from other
counries living here and dealing with difficult living conditions. It
has always had a dense population. In fact for over fifty years, the
Lower East Side has been one of the New York City's poorest areas and
very slow to change.
However after years of neglect the neighborhood is now in a turnaround.
Older buildings have been renovated, there is also now new construction.
You can find anything from pre-war walk-ups to luxury buildings. It's
now cleaner and safer with lots of choices in tendy nightlife destinations.
It remains a friendly community atmosphere like it has always been.
Apartment prices are less expensive than the East Village or Chinatown.
The Lower East Side is located north of Houston and South of Division
Street.
